Library

Long Health Sciences Library

The Columbia University Health Sciences Library is one of the largest academic health sciences libraries in the nation, hosting one of the most comprehensive collections in New York. The collection contains a myriad of resources including over 510,000 monographs and 4,400 currently received journals. In addition, we also maintain an ever-expanding collection of full text electronic journals, electronic books and hundreds of electronic databases and indexes. Our resources are developed to support the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health and The Columbia University Medical Center.

Education and instruction in the use of the library’s resources is provided via public and customized training classes. Training is offered in the use of: MEDLINE and other electronic indexes to the journal literature, bibliographic citation management software (Endnote and Reference Manager), Harvey (the cardiac patient simulator), PowerPoint, and much more.

The Library offers a variety of study spaces for both group and individual study. Wireless network access is available throughout the Library.

Other services offered in the library include a full service Photocopy Center providing specialized services like custom binding and poster making, access to fax services, and a Borrow Direct program whereby books from other Columbia libraries will be delivered to the Health Sciences Library for pick up and return. Additional information can be found on the library’s homepage at: http://library.cpmc.columbia.edu/hsl/

The Library’s Archives and Special Collections contains rare and unique materials documenting the history of medicine and the history of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. The most noteworthy collections include the Florence Nightingale Collection, The Sigmund Freud Collection and the Jerome P. Webster Library of Plastic Surgery.

The Medical Center Library is one of Columbia University’s 22 libraries, and is a unit of the Office of Education and Scholarly Resources. The library is located in the Hammer Health Sciences Center at 701 West 168th Street. Librarians can be reached via email at hs-library@columbia.edu and by phone at (212) 305-3692.
